Answer to Question #12359 Submitted to "Ask the Experts"

Category: Medical and Dental Equipment/Shielding — Lead Aprons

The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field:

Q

The use of a lead apron during orthopedic surgery while using an image intensifier is common. I want to know whether or not I am protected from radiation if I do not wear a lead apron but stand behind a person who is wearing a lead apron.

A

Yes, you would be protected from x rays just like the person who is wearing the lead apron. This is not recommended practice, however, because it requires the person without a lead apron to be sure to stay behind the lead apron wearer every time the x-ray generator is on. This can make the procedure inefficient and can lead to the unshielded individual getting unnecessary exposure when he or she is not fully behind the person wearing the apron.
