68th Health Physics Society Annual Meeting – Decommissioning Special Session

The Health Physics Society (HPS) Decommissioning Section is sponsoring a special session on decontamination and decommissioning at the 68th HPS Annual Meeting in National Harbor on Tuesday, 25 July. The special session "Decommissioning" will be held 8 am–12 pm and will include:

  • Tom Hansen, PhD, CHP, RRPT, "Cyclotron Decommissioning" – Hansen will present data, observations, and photographs from completed projects and a discussion of similarities and differences between these and other decommissioning projects.
  • Joseph Power, "Wasteland to Wonderland: Remediation of a New Jersey Brownfield Site" – Power will talk about the former National Lead Industries site in Sayreville, New Jersey, consisting of 100+ hectares with radiological impacts resulting from historical site operations.
  • Phil Rutherford, "Waste Characterization by the Department of Energy at the Energy Technology Engineering Center" – Rutherford will present on the Department of Energy (DOE) – Energy Technology Engineering Center D&D past and going issues revolving around the site regarding the DOE and California Department of Toxic Substance Control signed Amendment to Order on Consent.
  • Ken Gavlik, "State of California Licensee Decommissioning: Why It Pays to Plan Ahead" – Gavlik will discuss why it pays for licensees in the state of California to plan for decommissioning.
  • Tom Hansen, PhD, CHP, RRPT, "Important Practical Considerations for Final Status Survey Planning With Proposed Revisions to MARSSIM" – Hansen will end the presentations with his discussion about four MARSSIM proposed revisions that are of practical importance to anyone contemplating future decommissioning surveys: determining the lower bound of the gray region, determining scan survey coverage, the use of "scan only" surveys, and guidance pertaining to the selection of decommissioning survey contractors.
  • A one-hour panel discussion, which will end the session.
