AIRRS Section Announces Outstanding Radiation Safety Program Award

The Academic, Industrial, and Research Radiation Safety (AIRRS) Section of the Health Physics Society (HPS) is announcing a new award—"Outstanding Radiation Safety Program." This award is intended to acknowledge the outstanding radiation safety program in an academic, industrial, or research institution that uses radioactive materials or radiation-producing devices.

Eligibility:

  • The program must belong to an academic, industrial, or research institution that uses radioactive materials and/or radiation-producing devices.
  • The program should encompass a broad range of ionizing radiation use.
  • The program should have direct oversight of radiation safety responsibilities at the institution.
  • Award winners for the previous three years are ineligible.

Nominations may be made by any member of HPS.

Nomination must include:

  • The unique radiation safety problem or situation (e.g., a commendable response to a large incident, steps taken to address an unusual or novel procedure, or a large number of labs or clinics to serve),
  • A description of how this problem was addressed,
  • A summary of the positive results or impacts of corrective measures taken, and
  • A description of the scope of responsibility of the program (for example, number and staff positions within the Radiation Safety Office, uses and types of ionizing radiation, number of active labs, number of people trained, etc.).

Selection Criteria:

  • Awardee must meet the eligibility requirements.
  • Awardee must send a representative to theHPS annual meeting to accept the award.

The award consists of an HPS plaque and paid registration to attend the HPS annual meeting.

Nomination packet should be submitted to Steven Grimm and Danny McClung.

The nomination process will open 1 January 2022 and the deadline for submission of the nomination packet is 1 March 2022. The SOP for this award is found on the AIRRS web page under the Awards tab.
