On May 11, 2002, Society President George Anastas wrote a letter of congratulations to officials in the State of Georgia, Europe, on the successful recovery of two Strontium-90 orphan source Radioisotopic Thermoelectric Generators (RTGs) found abondoned by two wood cutters.

The Preliminary Program for the American Radiation Safety Conference and Exposition (ARSCE) notes that a 30-40 minute presentation on this Orphan Source Recovery will follow the Business Meeting on Wednesday, June 19, at the ARSCE in Tampa, Florida.

The Health Physics Society has recently released an Official Position Statement calling for state and federal actions to better control orphan sources.
