Granite Countertops and Radiation - HPS Response and Information Sheet

The New York Times Home section of 24 July 2008 carried the article "What's Lurking in Your Countertop?" revealing reportedly high levels of radon gas emission from commercially available kitchen countertops. In order to provide scientific information that does not support the concern raised by the article, Health Physics Society President Richard E. Toohey, PhD, CHP, has written a letter to the New York Times editor, and the Health Physics Society (HPS) has posted an information sheet in the Radon area of the HPS Web site feature Ask the Experts.
