No associations between the releases of 131I from the Hanford Nuclear site in Washington State and thyroid disease were found in a study managed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The Hanford Thyroid Disease Study (HTDS) results were released on June 22 following a 13-year study of 3,440 people who were young children during the releases of 131I from the site from 1944 through 1957.

CDC's website presents a summary of the HTDS. The Health Physics Society's Newsletter August cover story will feature an interview with Health Physics Society member Dr. Charles Miller and Paul Garbe of CDC about the study and its results.
