Irradiator and Detector/Shield Available

The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention's Health and Environmental Testing Laboratory is seeking a new home for a JL Shepherd model Mark IV dosimeter irradiator (pictured left). The irradiator was used in the radiological/environmental TLD program to irradiate dosimeters as part of the calibration process. Calibration of the TLDs included irradiation of the TLDs, readout of the TLDs, and comparison of the results to a known dose value. It was in very good operating condition when the program was discontinued—TLDs were no longer necessary once Maine Yankee was completely decommissioned. The source contained 4.44x109 Bq 137Cs in 1986 and now has approximately 1.998x109 Bq. A copy of the original operating manual is available. If another laboratory would like to have an additional dosimeter irradiator on hand as a backup unit, perhaps this would be a good money-saving option. If someone is willing to pay for shipping or can come pick it up . . . it is theirs to have (assuming their license can accommodate it).

Also available is a unique old NaI detector and shield (pictured left), currently used for background dosimeter storage. The shield is constructed of prewar lead bricks. The lab is moving—staff will not be able to take this and would prefer to give it to someone who could use it, rather than disposing of it.
