2019 HPS Annual Meeting: Plenary Session

The plenary session of the 2019 Health Physics Society (HPS) Annual Meeting will be held Monday morning, 8 July. After the session is opened by HPS President Nolan Hertel, Lisa E. Gordon-Hagerty, Under Secretary for Nuclear Security and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Administrator, begins the session with a presentation about the importance of health physicists to the future of US security and how NNSA has launched an integrated effort to recruit the next generation of scientists, engineers, and technicians.

The first G. William Morgan lecturer, Dr. John N. Galayda, from SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, speaks next on the Linac Coherent Light Source facilities and projects taking place there. Following this, Dr. L. Liu, from the China Institute of Radiation Protection (CIRP), will talk about CIRP, which is the only comprehensive research institute in China dedicated to radiation protection and environmental health.

Speaking next about the late effects of radiation therapy will be our Robert S. Landauer Lecturer, Dr. Rebecca M. Howell, from the University of Texas at MD Anderson Cancer Center. This presentation will look at dose-response relationships for secondary cancers and discuss new modalities in therapy.

The second G. William Morgan lecturer of the morning will be Dr. Dale L. Preston, of Hirosoft International, who will speak about some of the latest information comparing cancer risk in specific exposure populations. Concluding the session will be Dr. Ohtsura Niwa, from the Radiation Effects Research Foundation, who will walk us through the difference in thought processes when speaking science to the public.
