State Perspectives on Decommissioning Issues
B.L. Hamrick (California Department of Health Services)
Both Agreement and non-Agreement States are stakeholders in any decommissioning action within their borders, whether or not a State agency has regulatory oversight. The continued inconsistency between U.S. EPA and U.S. NRC hampers expeditious cleanup decisions and erodes public confidence in the decommissioning process. Both the Organization of Agreement States and the Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors have called for consistency in standards across all sources of ionizing radiation. The States are continuing their efforts to work with the U.S. EPA, U.S. NRC, U.S. DOE, the Health Physics Society, and Congress to develop a strong and consistent framework for radiological decommissioning actions, and other radiological standards.
