Radiation Measurements and Standards Needs for Radiation Protection
R.C. Yoder (Landauer Inc.)
The Council on Ionizing Radiation Measurements and Standards (CIRMS) has recently issued its fourth triennial report on needs for measurements and standards addressing current issues in radiation safety as well as medical and industrial applications of ionizing radiation. The CIRMS Needs Report represents a collective effort of scientists and policy makers from government, industry and academia. The report is used by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and other agencies in formulating their key strategies pertaining to standards development and measurement research. Needs are expressed in the form of Measurement Program Descriptions (MPD) of which 11 of 23 are pertinent to radiation safety and are the subject for the presentation. These MPD's span environmental and public needs, occupational radiation protection and homeland security.
