Francis Costello Named to ACMUI

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) reported on 27 February 2014 that Francis Costello, CHP, member of the Health Physics Society, has been named as the Agreement State Representative to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Advisory Committee on Medical Uses of Isotopes (ACMUI).

Costello has been a radiation health physicist with the Pennsylvania Bureau of Radiation Protection since 2007. He is responsible for the inspection of byproduct materials licensees, participates in emergency response activities, and is the lead investigator for medical events involving radioisotopes. Costello worked for NRC Region I, where he performed licensing and inspection for materials licensees, reviewed Agreement State programs, and served as division director.

Costello holds a bachelor's and master's in health physics from Rutgers University. He was certified by the American Board of Health Physicists in 1977.

Members of the ACMUI come from various disciplines and comment on changes to NRC regulations and guidance; evaluate certain nonroutine uses of radioactive material; provide technical assistance in licensing, inspection, and enforcement cases; and bring key issues to the staff's attention for appropriate action.
