In Memoriam: Clifford "Cliff" Elmont Winters, Jr.

Clifford "Cliff" Elmont Winters, Jr., 80, passed away on Sunday, 16 December 2012 in Wichita Falls, Texas. He was born 16 February 1932 in New London, Connecticut. He is survived by Beverly Joan Porter, his wife of "59 years, 2 months, 7 days," stated in the manner that he would recite to her daily; his oldest daughter, Lori Ann Strader of Wichita Falls; his son, Scott Joseph Winters of Knoxville, Tennessee; and their respective spouses and family, totaling four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Pamela Dru Rogers.

Cliff served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and received instruction in the Navy's nuclear training program. After he left the military, Cliff supported the radiological testing program of nuclear submarines being built in Groton, Connecticut, from 1955 to 1967. He was proud to have been a part of the team that made the USS Nautilus a reality. He was recruited by Todd Shipyards in Galveston, Texas, as the radiation safety officer from 1968 to 1980. He supported the refueling operations of the NSS Savannah and was instrumental in commercializing the Technical Research Division. Cliff was the founder of Suntrac Services, Inc., and its president and CEO from 1981 to 1998. Those who knew him will remember Cliff for his dedication to family and friends.

Cliff was active in the Health Physics Society, especially the South Texas Chapter (STC); he recognized the value of having local chapters and actively engaged at every opportunity to support the chapter's Affiliate Program. Cliff was given the honor of being named an Honorary Life Time Member of the STC for his serves as president, founder, and chairman of the Affiliates Program. The affiliates of the STC are the principal source of income for the STC's funding of numerous student scholarships and speaker awards for several years. All current, past, and student members of the STC are extremely thankful for all that Cliff Winters did for our chapter.
