The deadline for nominations for the Richard S. Hodes, MD, Honor Lecture Award is 30 June 2004. This award was created by the Southeast Compact Commission to encourage environmental professionals and political leaders to develop innovative approaches to waste management in the United States. It honors the memory of the late Chairman of the Southeast Compact Commission, Dr. Hodes. More information about the award can be found at the Southeast Compact Commission website.

H.W. "Bud" Arrowsmith, currently Vice President of marketing and sales for RWE NUKEM Corporation, was the 2003 and first recipient of this award. He and Scientific Ecology Group (SEG) developed and implemented numerous technical innovations in the field of radioactive waste management, including compaction, incineration, recycling, decontamination, and vitrification.
