Current Medical Health Physics Section (MHPS) Activities

The MHPS board would like to inform the section of our activities and encourage participation from membership. Section or committee endeavors are not always transparent enough, and MHPS hopes this information will change that and energize our section membership. Here are some highlights of what has and is happening of which you may not be aware.

Regulatory Guide 8.39 Revisions

The MHPS provided comments and suggested modifications to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) proposed updates for Regulatory Guide 8.39. These were submitted to the Health Physics Society (HPS) Board and subsequently to the NRC.

Radioactive Decedents Project

NRC guidance on radioactive decedents is needed for licensees. The MHPS plans to provide valuable insights and recommendations to the NRC and welcomes any comments from membership. Send comments to MHPS Secretary/Treasurer Richard Harvey.

Patient Release Session at Annual Meeting

The American Academy of Health Physics is presenting a special session at the HPS 65th Annual Meeting in July 2020 on the release of radioactive patients. The MHPS is cosponsoring the special session and will participate in the program.

HPS 53rd Midyear Meeting Special Session

A special session regarding fluoroscopy and training and credentialing requirements was conducted at the HPS 53rd Midyear Meeting in Bethesda, Maryland, in January 2020. Several noteworthy invited speakers provided overviews of training content, best practices for effective programs, and insight into Joint Commission (JC) expectations.

MHP Scope of Practice

A team from the HPS and the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) is working to publish a scope of practice document for medical health physics.

New Board Members

Section Past President John Gough is conducting a search for new MHPS Officers. Please contact John if you are interested.

Several Older Reports ICRP Reports Free for Download

The International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) has made several older ICRP reports now free for download.

Government Relations Committee, MHPS, and JC

MHPS continues to market our expertise to the JC and promote inclusion within the JC framework and our recognition as subject-matter experts for radiation safety in health care.

Gonadal Shielding

HPS and AAPM continue to facilitate dissemination of the position statement advocating for discontinued use of gonadal shielding. The HPS endorsed the AAPM position earlier this year.

Annual Meeting

The MHPS is proposing a half-day special session at the HPS 65th Annual Meeting in July 2020 in an effort to sustain the provision of quality meeting content for the membership.
