The Department of Energy (DOE) has suspended the release of potentially contaminated scrap metals for recycling from its nuclear facilities, according to a July 13 Press Release. "This suspension is part of a new policy aimed at ensuring contaminated materials are not recycled into consumer products and at improving the department's management of scrap materials at its nuclear weapons production sites," according to Secretary of Energy Bill Richardson.

The Health Physics Society's Newsletter interviewed health physicist Tony LaMastra and others in its March 2000 cover story on the issue of recycling of scrap metals.
