Summary
  Hopewell Designs, Inc. has an exciting opportunity for a Radiation Safety Officer (RSO). The Radiation Safety Officer is responsible for planning, organizing, developing, and managing all aspects of a comprehensive Radiation Safety Program. The RSO ensures regulatory compliance for domestic and international operations, establishes policy and/or procedures, trains staff, plans and organizes objectives and long-range programs, and evaluates the effectiveness of source loading operations.
Key Responsibilities
 
  • Serves as Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) and acts as HDI’s qualified expert (SME) with the State of Georgia Department of Natural Resources (GA DNR), US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), and Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) to ensure effective implementation of a radioactive material licensing.
  • Authors, reviews, submits, responds, and maintains all US NRC & CNSC Sealed Source & Device Registrations (SSDR) activity, for domestic (NRC) and International regulatory agencies.
  • Develops, approves, reviews, and implements Radiation Safety Program policies and procedures for the safe use and handling of radioactive materials.
  • Develops and implements strategic objectives for the Radiation Safety Program. Develop and direct the long- and short-term planning to meet business objectives contributing to the company.
  • Implements new radiation safety and security regulations and requirements and develops and submits amendments, renewal applications, and updated plans related to the company’s radioactive materials licenses and related documents and plans.
  • Completes and files reports and documentation required by regulatory agencies.
  • Conceptualizes and directs the development, implementation, and maintenance of Radiation Safety Training programs.
  • Serves as Reviewing Official for increased Regulatory Controls.
  • Performs shielding analyses for irradiators and shipping casks.
  • Provides training and consulting to customers in instrument calibration programs, radiation protection, and quality assurance.
  • Develops procedures for radiation work including source loading & transfer.
  • Supports radiation work involving transfer of sources.
  • Supports integration and installation of irradiator systems.
  • Responsible for shipping and receiving of radioactive material, type A and B quantities.
  • Administers the Dosimetry Program, receives and assigns dosimetry, tracks occupational exposures, completes reports and reviews doses with personnel.
  • Provides leadership to staff to achieve goals and vision of Radiation Safety and the day-to-day operations.
  • Evaluates and provides feedback to other department staff involved with Radiation Safety to ensure compliance actions and operations are implemented in accordance with approved procedures, regulatory requirements, and best management practices.
  • Investigates all incidents and deviations from approved Radiation Safety policies, procedures, and practices to implement corrective actions, as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
 
  • Bachelor’s Degree in nuclear science, nuclear technology, or related field in natural sciences or engineering; or equivalent experience in the nuclear field or health physics.
  • 5-10 years’ experience in the nuclear industry, performing health physics related work such as radiation surveys, instrument calibrations, and radiation shielding calculations.
    • At least 2 years with regulatory designation of Radiation Safety Officer.
  • Technical knowledge of radiation protection, understands units of exposure, dose, and activity.
  • Ability to comprehend and apply federal, state and local ionizing radiation regulations, with knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations governing the use of radioactive materials.
  • Ability to develop and work with recordkeeping and data management systems and related software applications.
  • Ability to establish policies and procedures prepare and interpret technical reports, and maintain required records.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with key administrative and professional personnel, as well as external agencies.
  • Experience working with radiation detection instruments and/or dosimetry.
  • Previous experience working with sealed sources and/or radiation generating devices (irradiators, x-ray systems, linear accelerators), is a plus.
  • Previous experience in shipping and receiving of Type A and Type B quantities of radioactive materials is desirable.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others and demonstrates professional, ethical, respectful, and courteous behavior when interacting with others.
  • Advanced computer skills: MS Office, spreadsheets, data analytics, and presentations.
  • Strong hands-on skills and mechanical aptitude.
  • Exceptional customer service skills.
  • Previous experience working under a Quality assurance program.
