College Student Opportunities and Information
Welcome from HPS President Howard Dickson
Welcome to the College Student section of the HPS Web site! This site was established to provide timely and valuable information for current and prospective health physics students. This is an exciting time if you are considering health physics as a career, and in fact I envy you! The need for health physicists is expected to grow across many employment sectors including government, medical facilities, and power reactors. One of the unique aspects of the health physics profession is the opportunity to change focus and employment sectors while still remaining a health physicist. I've been in this profession for over 40 years and have had the opportunity to work at two national laboratories in both research and operational health physics, at a nuclear weapons test site, at a not-for-profit corporation specializing in science and engineering education, and for a contractor supporting homeland security. I have been involved with a myriad of facilities including accelerators, reactors, and hot cells. The income for health physicists is very good, and more detailed information can be found on the Careers page on this Web site. It all begins with a quality education at one of the many colleges and universities that provide four-year and advanced health physics degrees. The names and locations of these programs, as well as some of the research conducted at these institutions, can be found in the Health Physics Education Reference Book. More comprehensive information on the Society and its activities can be found on the front page of the Web site. If you have any questions, I'd love to hear from you at hwdickson@tampabay.rr.com. Academic Education Committee
Health Physics Students, on behalf of the HPS Academic Education Committee, I want to welcome you and thank you for expressing interest in a future career in health physics. This page has been established in order to provide you with links to academic programs, scholarships, and fellowship opportunities in health physics. The Health Physics Society offers a variety of assistance to students, from formal travel grants to attend the national meeting to informal contacts established in your local chapter. I encourage you to pursue the opportunities found on this page and invite you to attend meetings of your student branch, your local chapter, and the Health Physics Society. The Academic Education Committee serves as your liaison to the national Society. Please contact me if you have any questions or suggestions as to how we can better assist you. Sincerely, The Academic Education Committee works to assure that the quality and numbers of people entering the health physics profession meet projected demand. The Academic Education Committee is composed of nine members representing a diverse cross section of the membership of the Society, no less than two of whom shall be directors or faculty members in health physics academic programs. The Academic Education Committee also administers the Society's student branch program. A general description of the Academic and Training Opportunities is provided in our Public Outreach area and in our Health Physics Education Reference Book. This area is intended to provide a convenient place for current or prospective students to find scholarship, fellowship, research grant, and other student financial support opportunities.
