Could you please provide some information or a few references
in which I could gather prevailing information on background radiation
in various countries?

Perhaps the best single source is the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR).
Its reports are available for purchase through the United Nations or
can be loaned from various university libraries. Numerous scientific
journals, including Health Physics, Journal of Environmental Radioactivity, and Radiation Protection Dosimetry, contain topical reports of radiation levels in various areas in the world.
