Answer to Question #5446 Submitted to "Ask the Experts"

Category: Security Screening — Airport Screening

The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field:

Q

Is there any possibility that the screening of a passenger's hand-carried baggage by an x-ray machine before boarding an aircraft could damage the screen of a personal or laptop computer?

A

Interesting question. There just isn't enough radiation to cause damage to much of anything (other than causing a little darkening on some of the faster camera films). I've run my laptop through numerous times (in fact, I just did again yesterday) and have seen no effect.
