Answer to Question #5269 Submitted to "Ask the Experts"

Category: Microwaves, Radar, and Radiofrequency — Satellite Dishes

The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field:

Q
I am concerned about my long-term health in respect to possible radiation coming from a satellite dish for DirecTV® placed two feet from where I sleep eight hours a night. They placed the dish off the side of my house, ironically, level with where my head is resting when I am lying in bed. It's approximately two feet from my head pointing into the sky on the outer side of my bedroom wall. Is there a danger to this? Even a minimal one? Should I ask that they come and move it?

A

You need not worry about radiation from a satellite receiver dish as it does not emit radiation. Rather it collects or gathers in the satellite signal, which is weak radiofrequency radiation, much like radio and TV waves. So sleep soundly and without any fear whatsoever. You are perfectly safe. And, enjoy your satellite dish programs.
