Answer to Question #5266 Submitted to "Ask the Experts"Category: Alpha Emitters — Uranium The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field: Q
It has just been found that we have uranium in our well water above the recommended limits. Is there a way of cleaning the uranium from the water? A
The short answer is yes, but to do so may prove to be impractical. Levels of uranium in water can be reduced by a number of techniques including distillation, electrodialysis, reverse osmosis, and ion exchange. Lime softening has also been found to be effective, but is quite pH dependent. The specific circumstances of your situation need to be evaluated before determining which method would provide the most effective removal consistent with cost. Other alternatives, such as bottled water, may be more economical if drinking water is the only consideration. Ronald Kathren, CHP
