Answer to Question #521 Submitted to "Ask the Experts"Category: Consumer Products The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field: Q
I have been searching for a 10 mCi plated Alpha source either 238Pu or 244Cm for use in a biological experiment. Unfortunately it does not seem easy to find this activity. Do you know of a kind of network, clearinghouse, or dealers in recovered or used sources? I would think that if someone had one that was not in use they would want to get rid of it, but I just can't seem to find them. Thank you in advance for any help in this matter.

The Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors (CRCPD) maintains a directory of commercial services for assistance with radioactive material for recycling or adoption. The directory is updated as new information is recognized. On the Web site, scroll to the bottom of the left column, click on "Free Documents," then in the mid-right column click on "Orphan Source Documents" and scroll down to the list of directories.
The directories are maintained by Terry Devine at CRCPD. He can be reached at 502-227-4543 or by fax at 502-223-7026. He can assist people who have a one-time need for sources or small amounts of radioactive material.
I printed out the CRCPD directory for radioactive materials and devices accepted for recycling (by commercial firms or the Department of Energy). I looked for 244Cm and plutonium sources. North American Scientific accepts these sources for recycling and may be able to provide one for the experiment. The contact person is Alisa Cutrer and her fax number is 818-734-5209. Another possibility is AEA Technology. The contact person is Richard Yelland and he can be reached by phone at 412-655-6143.
