Answer to Question #4742 Submitted to "Ask the Experts"Category: Security Screening — Airport Screening The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field: Q
I'm from Belgium and I buy a lot of raw, wild-crafted organic foods in
the United States. They contain probiotics (healthy intestinal bacteria). Will
those bacteria be affected in any way by irradation of security equipment
?
A
The amount of radiation exposure used in x-ray screening units at
airports or even to check a ship's cargo is too little to cause changes
to the bacteria. Roughly, the radiation exposure from screening units
is 6-8 orders of magnitude (over one million) less than that used in
food irradiation and even that level doesn't affect all bacteria.
Bacteria are hardy little organisms.
