Answer to Question #4337 Submitted to "Ask the Experts"

Category: Medical and Dental Equipment/Shielding — Shielding

The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field:

Q

What is the light lead rubber (lead equivalent) as used in radiology and could you explain to me how the lightweight lead apron works when compared to a normal lead apron?

A

"Light" lead aprons use elements other than lead to provide x-ray shielding in a protective apron. See the "Ask The Experts" Lead Garments FAQ for a description of their composition. These aprons may be lighter than their lead counterparts; however, it is important to determine the lead equivalency of the apron. This is usually on a tag on the apron and/or is provided by the vendor. Whether an individual chooses to use a lead apron or a "light" lead apron, the apron must meet local regulatory requirements (typically 0.5 mm lead equivalent).
