Answer to Question #387 Submitted to "Ask the Experts"

Category: Medical and Dental Equipment/Shielding — Shielding

The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field:

Q
Could you please tell me where I can find structural shielding information for a PET facility?
A

The radiation safety design aspects for PET are discussed in:

  • Faulkner DB, Kearfott KJ, Manning RG. Planning of a clinical PET facility. J Nucl Med Tech 19:5-19; 1990.

  • Kearfott KJ, Carey JE, Clemenshaw MN, Faulkner DB. Radiation protection design for a clinical positron emission tomography (PET) imaging suite. Health Physics 63:581-591; 1992. Note: The designs discussed in this paper are excessively conservative.

  • NCRP 49, "Structural Shielding Design and Evaluation for Medical Use of X Rays and Gamma Rays of Energies up to 10 MeV," may be employed for making simple shielding estimates. NCRP reports may be ordered at the NCRP Publications Web page.
