Answer to Question #3048 Submitted to "Ask the Experts"

Category: Suntanning

The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field:

Q
Does tanning have an effect on our bone marrow? I was told that our bone marrow boils while we are tanning. Is this to some extent correct? Will we be able to donate bone marrow after frequently tanning in a tanning bed?
A

UV (ultraviolet) radiation does not penetrate deeply enough below the skin to affect internal organs. So the story you were told about tanning affecting bone marrow is not true. However, UV radiation from tanning beds, sun lamps, and from the sun does increase the risk of skin cancer. It is the position of the Health Physics Society that all individuals should avoid the use of tanning beds and sunlamps and protect themselves from the sun when outdoors for extended periods.
