Answer to Question #2127 Submitted to "Ask the Experts"

Category: Doses and Dose Calculations — Internal dose calculations

The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field:

Q
I am working on a study about the history of internal contamination with 241Am. Can you advise me about any Web sites or other source where some cases will be described or where could I find any information?
A

Dr. Ron E. Filipy, United States Transuranium and Uranium Registries (USTUR), suggests you go to the USTUR Web site for some references on 241Am. He also suggests you look at Health Physics, Volume 49, an initial report of USTUR case 246, the Hanford Americium Case, and Volume 69 which has several more papers about case 246. A paper about another USTUR americium case is in Volume 84 of Health Physics. The individual in this report is still alive and has been the subject of extensive urinalyses and whole-body counting since the time of his intake.

Dr. Filipy also notes that since the question is from the Czech Republic, the questioner might want to contact Irina Malatova in Prague. She is one of the foremost experts on americium. She is at the National Radiation Protection Institute, Srobarova 48, 100 00 Praha 10, Czech Republic. Her phone: 4202-67082611.

In Finland the americium expert is Tua Rahola, who has some americium information on her Web site.

Dr. Genevieve Roessler suggests that the Environmental Protection Agency has some basic information on its Web site on americium that you might find useful.
