Answer to Question #2061 Submitted to "Ask the Experts"Category: Nuclear Power — Nuclear Accidents The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field: Q
What is being done to prevent further nuclear power plant disasters like the ones at Three Mile Island and Chernobyl?
A
The accidents at Three Mile Island and Chernobyl were very different and comparisons would not be appropriate. We'll look at them separately.
Three Mile Island: There are a number of very good summaries on the Web that describe not only what happened, but the impact that the event had on United States nuclear power plants. An excellent summary is "The TMI-2 Accident: Its Impact, Its Lessons." Chernobyl: Again, there is some good information on the Web. A good synopsis of the event and the changes brought about as a result of the event can be found on the World Nuclear Association site. Linda Sewell, CHP
