Answer to Question #1722 Submitted to "Ask the Experts"Category: Nuclear or Radioactive Devices — Nuclear Weapons The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field: Q
Has there been a released study on the effects of the Nevada nuclear bomb tests on military personnel and their offspring from 1951 to 1962? My father died of melonoma cancer, located in the center of his back. He was a Lt. Colonel in the Army and a Liaison Officer between the military and civilian personnel in Nevada during that time.
A
There have been several studies of cancer incidence in atomic veterans (military personnel deliberately or accidentally exposed during nuclear weapons testing). The studies have been generally inconclusive or contradictory. A major problem in the studies is determining dose to individuals. The National Academy of Sciences is currently evaluating a feasibility study for determining dose. There are several National Academy of Sciences reports on the atomic veterans. These reports can be found at the National Academy Press Web site. Search for "atomic veterans." A recent publication you will find there is "The Five Series Study: Mortality of Military Participants in U.S. Nuclear Weapons Tests (2000)." This report lists several earlier studies in its references.
