Answer to Question #1679 Submitted to "Ask the Experts"

Category: Pregnancy and Radiation — Exposures not directly to embryo/fetus

The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field:

Q
In 1953, my mother had a chest x ray early in her pregnancy while she was carrying me. I was wondering if that might have had an effect on my lifelong chronic upper respiratory infections and a diminished immune system. I also have fibromyalgia and CFS.
A
Your mother's chest x ray did not expose you to any significant radiation. In fact, during your mother's pregnancy you received more radiation from natural sources of radiation that we all receive. Therefore your present medical problems have nothing to do with your mother's chest x ray while she was pregnant. Robert L. Brent, MD, PhD
