Answer to Question #1291 Submitted to "Ask the Experts"

Category: Lasers

The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field:

Q
We will be installing a new manufacturing line which will have a laser station. What training does someone at our company require? Do we have to have a certified laser safety officer, and from where would training be provided?
A
The standard ANSI Z136.1 - Safe Use of Lasers will provide guidance in this area. Since you'll be using a Class IV laser, a laser safety officer (LSO) and training for both the designated LSO and the users is required. At this time, there is no such thing as a certified laser safety officer. If desired, please contact John Leonowich for more information or for assistance in arranging the appropriate training. John Leonowich, PhD Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
