Answer to Question #1239 Submitted to "Ask the Experts"

Category: Radiation Basics — Interaction Coefficients

The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field:

Q
What is the cross section of the reaction, 2H(gamma,neutron)1H?
A
The cross section is zero below the threshold of 2.225 MeV, after which it rises to a peak of about 2.4 mb = 2.4 X 10-27 cm2 at a photon energy of about 4.5 MeV. It decreases steadily thereafter, falling below 1 mb at 14 MeV. For a figure, see p. 335 in R. D. Evans, The Atomic Nucleus, Krieger Publ. Co., Malabar, FL (1985). James Turner, PhD, CHP
