Answer to Question #1036 Submitted to "Ask the Experts"

Category: Microwaves, Radar, and Radiofrequency — Power Lines

The following question was answered by an expert in the appropriate field:

Q
Does the United States regulate the amount of electromagnetic radiation heavy power lines and machinery output? And, if so, where can I find a listing?
A
There is no US federal regulation on the intensity of power line electromagnetic fields or on the intensity of those fields from machinery.

For information on potential health hazards of power line electromagnetic fields see the report of the National Academy of Sciences at the National Academy Press Catalog: Possible Health Effects of Exposure to Residential Electric and Magnetic Fields Web page.

Guidance for occupational exposure to power line electromagnetic fields is published by the American Council of Governmental Industrial Hygienists.

The International Commission on Nonionizing Radiation Protection is an advisory body that has published guidelines for both occupational and general public exposure to electromagnetic fields. The Federal Communications Commission regulates radiofrequency (RF) emissions from telecommunications equipment, and the US Food and Drug Administration regulates RF emissions from electronic products.
