Analysis of Small Sample Geometry for Concurrent Identification and Quantification of Mixed-Nuclide Samples

Significant information can be gained from a gamma spectroscopic analysis of bioassay or environmental samples. Several important radionuclides that can contribute heavily to total internal dose are not gamma emitters and cannot be discerned using gamma spectral analysis. One can use an alpha/beta counter to make activity measurements for the charged particle emitters, but this detector only provides gross activity; it does not provide emitted particle energy discrimination. Particle energy is necessary to identify a nuclide by radiological analysis. The objective of this research was to assess the feasibility of determining activities for several different radionuclides, each emitting a different type of radiation, present in the same sample, without complex chemical separations or chemical preparations.
