Jefferson Lab Reliability Based Design Methods for Accelerator Safety Systems

This paper describes the risk based design methods used at Jefferson Lab for prompt ionizing radiation protection. The relatively new concept of "safety integrity levels (SIL)" used in evaluation of safety systems is introduced. Examples of design trade-offs are given and the impact they have on the overall reliability of the safety system.
