Shallow Dose Measurements Using Electronic Dosimeters: How and Why?

This paper is divided into two sections. The first describes some of the requirements for making shallow dose equivalent (SDE) measurements. Fundamental quantities used for SDE measurements are discussed, including absorbed dose, stopping power, linear energy transfer and charged particle equilibrium. The second section describes the issues involved with the need for SDE measurements. The basis for the regulatory limits are discussed, describing the order-of-magnitude difference in dose limits between SDE an deep dose equivalent (DDE).
