Laboratory Accreditation Policy Committee OrganizationThe Laboratory Accreditation Policy Committee has the lead responsibility for HPS Strategic Plan Objective 1.4. The Laboratory Accreditation Policy Committee's (LAPC) purpose is to oversee the HPS-sponsored program to accredit portable radiation-measuring instrument and radioactive source manufacturing laboratories. The Health Physics Society has conducted a laboratory accreditation program (LAP) for instrument calibration laboratories since 1988. The program has been periodically updated to incorporate the latest guidance in accrediting calibration laboratories. For example, in 1992, the program was revised to meet requirements in ISO/IEC Guide 25; in 2004, the program was revised to meet requirements in ISO/IEC 17025. In 2004, the HPS Board of Directors approved the latest revision of the program for instrument calibration laboratories and expanded the scope of the accreditation program to include organizations that manufacture or supply radiation calibration sources. The LAPC has the responsibility of maintaining the procedures needed for the operation of the accrediting program, maintaining the criteria used for laboratory assessment, and providing independent oversight and review of the recommendations for accreditation presented by the Laboratory Accreditation Assessment Committee. The Laboratory Accreditation Policy Committee extends an invitation to any portable radiation-measuring instrument laboratory or radioactive source manufacturing laboratory to apply for HPS laboratory accreditation.
