Manfred joined the (then) Health Physics Group, led at that time by Johan Baarli, in 1968 as a young physicist, having graduated from the University of Munich. In 1991 he became leader of the Radiation Protection Group, treading in the footsteps of Bernard Wheatley, Johan Baarli and Klaus Geobel. In 1991 he took up appointment of Deputy Leader of the Technical Inspection and Safety Division. Hans Menzel, well known for his work on the ICRU, succeeds Manfred with our very best wishes for success in his new role.
Manfred will perhaps be best known to dosimetrists for his determined and sustained efforts to improve the dosimetry of accelerator radiation fields. This work, sustained over more than twenty years, involved many international collaborations - notably with Lebedev's group in Serpukhov and Zielcynski's group in Swierk. This work has culminated in the development of a high-energy radiation calibration facility, which is widely used by the international community and will prove to be of great importance in the future. It is a fitting legacy to the work of Manfred and his colleagues.
Manfred will be missed but we hope that he may be able to take time off from his busy retirement to attend some of our meetings and give us the benefit of his insights.
We wish Manfred, his wife Elisabeth and his family "A Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage" in the years ahead.
