Presidents Emeritus Committee Solicits Nominations for Morgan Lecturers
I received the following letter from Keith Dinger, chair of the Health Physics Society (HPS) Presidents Emeritus Committee (please see letter below). The Accelerator Section is planning a special accelerator session at the 2005 annual HPS meeting. The Accelerator Section board plans to submit the name of a person of international stature to the Presidents Emeritus Committee, chaired by Past-President Keith Dinger.
If our nominee is chosen to be a Morgan Lecturer, this person will give the keynote address at the special accelerator session in Spokane. Therefore, we are looking for suitable names for the board to present.
In an earlier e-mail to all HPS Accelerator Section members, I inadvertently mentioned a sum of money associated with the award. The actual sum is determined annually by the Presidents Emeritus Committee.
The Morgan Lecture is not considered an HPS award, but it does seek to bring in persons of international stature and gives the HPS community the opportunity to benefit from the knowledge such a person can impart. Previous Morgan Lecturers who have given the keynote address at the special accelerator session include
Prior to submitting a name, please contact your nominee to obtain permission to nominate and request a short biography. This information may be forwarded directly to me. Please make sure your nominee is aware that he or she will give a lecture and that they must travel to Spokane, Washington, and be present at the annual meeting.
If you have any suggestions, please direct them to me.
Letter from Keith Dinger, HPS Presidents Emeritus Committee Chair:
"Dr. G. William Morgan bequeathed funds to the [Health Physics] Society [HPS] to be used for the support of internationally known authorities invited to present papers at meetings of the society. Selection of persons to be named a Morgan Lecturer and thus supported from the Morgan Fund is the responsibility of the Presidents Emeritus Committee. As chair of the Presidents Emeritus Committee, I am sending this solicitation for nominations to you as a 'Potential Requestor.' Potential requestors are individuals responsible for selecting speakers for one or more technical sessions at a national meeting of the society; e.g., chairs of program committees or committees involved in meeting programs, presidents of HPS sections, and presidents of affiliated organizations (AAHP and NRRPT).
"The amount of financial support for any selected speaker is authorized by the Presidents Emeritus Committee, but it is clearly intended to cover travel costs and expenses to allow the individual to appear for their presentation without personal expense. The selections of nominated individuals as Morgan Lecturers is made by a working group of the Presidents Emeritus Committee, which this year consists of President Emeriti Richard Vetter, Otto Raabe, Raymond Johnson, Paul Rohwer, and myself as chair. Multiple individuals may be selected as a Morgan Lecturer for a meeting.
"The requirement for selection is that the individual be internationally known and be invited to speak. U.S. citizens and members of the HPS are eligible provided they are internationally known.
"Nomination Process. If you have, or intend to invite an internationally known speaker for a technical session at the midyear or annual meeting, you may submit their nomination to me. (Although the midyear program is essentially set, invited speakers that you think qualify for Morgan Fund support may still be submitted for consideration). Nominations for midyear meeting speakers should be submitted as soon as possible, but no later than January 21, 2005. Nominations for the annual meeting should be submitted by March 1, 2005, although nominations may be considered up to mid-June.
"Nomination Submittal. You should notify me as soon as possible with the name of individuals you are nominating for Morgan Fund support. This notification should be accompanied with, or followed with a CV and a statement of justification as to why you feel the individual qualifies for the support and evidence the individual is 'internationally known.'
"If you have any questions about this call for Morgan Lecturer nominations, please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to your help in bringing quality speakers to the technical sessions in our meetings this year."
