The ANSI N43 Standards Committee

John Taschner, ANSI N43 Chair
Gordon Lodde, ANSI N43 Vice-chair
Nancy Johnson, HPS Secretariat Standards Coordinator
The Health Physics Society (HPS) is secretariat for American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Accredited Standards Committee (ASC) N43. The ANSI N43 committee develops and maintains standards pertaining to the radiation protection aspects of radiation-producing equipment used in industrial and nonmedical research and development activities (excluding nuclear reactors). There are about 30 members on the ANSI N43 committee that represent producers and users of this equipment, as well as regulatory organizations, professional organizations, federal agencies, labor organizations, and individuals. These organizations and individuals coordinate the development, revision, and reaffirmation of standards using the ANSI Project Initiation Notice System (PINS) form. The ANSI N43 committee also ballots draft standards that have been developed and approved by the various subcommittees. Once the draft standards are approved by the ANSI N43 committee, they are submitted to ANSI for approval for publication by the HPS as ANSI/HPS standards. The ANSI N43 committee chair, vice-chair, and HPS secretariat standards coordinator manage the N43 standards development process through its subcommittee chairs listed below.

The ANSI N43 committee currently has 14 active subcommittees and two standards have been published by the HPS since 1998 as noted above. The revisions to three standards have recently been approved by ANSI and are expected to be published by the HPS this year. The remaining standards are in various stages of revision. ANSI guidelines require that standards be revised or reaffirmed within a five-to-ten-year period. Any standard issue date that exceeds ten years is automatically withdrawn. Copies of ANSI/HPS standards may be obtained from the HPS.
