Accelerator Section Meeting Minutes from the Annual HPS Meeting in Denver, Colorado, on June 27, 2000

Scott Walker
The HPS scheduled a short meeting between the morning accelerator section papers and the HPS luncheon. The morning session ran overtime, and thus we had 15 minutes to finish the business meeting.

Joe McDonald opened the business meeting by sharing the president's report.

No minutes from the last meeting were read because of the time constraint. The minutes were accepted as presented over the web. They had been sent to everyone as part of the section newsletter.

The Accelerator Section selected Steve Musolino as the Accelerator Section delegate to the International Radiation Protection Association (IRPA) meeting in Hiroshima, Japan, this summer.

Vashek Vylet was asked to report on the progress of setting up an accelerator health physics summer school in Erice, Italy. The Accelerator Section proposed the workshop to the Europeans. The Europeans thought the workshop was a good idea and asked the HPS Accelerator Section to set up this school. The finances to pay for the summer school teachers have not been easy to acquire. The application for the summer school has to be submitted by a European accelerator organization, and it will not be submitted until the finances to fund the school are in order. Thus, the plans for the summer school are currently on hold.

Carter Ficklen presented the treasurer’s report. The HPS is getting better at giving the report to the sections. The HPS also finally gave us the interest for the money they owed the Accelerator Section. The money has recently been sent to the Northern California Chapter of the HPS for the Wade Paterson Memorial Fund

The newsletter name was changed this year from the Accelerator Section Newsletter to the International Accelerator Radiological Protection E-mail (IARPE) Newsletter.

The members of the Accelerator Section nominating committee were Carter Ficklen, Ralph Thomas, and James Liu. The accelerator section officers were nominated and the voting occurred over the internet as per the Accelerator Section bylaw change. Thirty-five members of the Accelerator Section voted. The elected officers are listed as follows.
President-elect: Scott Schwahn
Secretary: Scott Walker
Newsletter editor: Dawn Lobbes
Board member: Wes Dunn
Board member: Sayed Rokni

The board of directors decided that it is appropriate for the outgoing president to act as chair of the nominating committee for the following year. Thus, Joe McDonald is the nominating committee chair for the next election.

Joe McDonald appointed Scott Schwahn as parliamentarian for the coming year.

The HPS had a substantial number of nominations for awards this year. The HPS is encouraging chapters to nominate people for HPS awards.

Joe McDonald has drafted a standard operating procedure (SOP) for the operation of the Accelerator Section. Joe will bring this draft to the Accelerator Section board meeting for review and approval.

The ANSI N43.1 committee estimates that the draft of the accelerator safety standard will be complete within one year.

Joe McDonald suggested that members of the Accelerator Section may wish to contribute to accelerator health physics personnel who suffered losses during the Los Alamos fire (two radiological control technicians lost everything and another’s possessions suffered significant smoke damage). Anyone wishing to contribute should give their donations to Sayed Rokni, who will forward the contributions to fire victims.

The Moyer Plaque was transferred from Joe McDonald to Scott Schwahn and will be transferred to each successive president of the Accelerator Section.

Lorraine Day moved that the Accelerator Section choose the best student presentation associated with accelerator research and provide the student with an award. This award will be given in honor of Wade Patterson. The section board will appoint judges each year. James Liu seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.

Hanns Mensel suggested that members from the US and Europe accelerator health physics communities establish the groundwork for trans-European/US accelerator safety regulations.

Scott Walker was asked to follow through in attempting to establish an accelerator health physics summer school by working with the HPS Summer School Committee.

The meeting was adjourned.
