FROM THE OFFICERS
The President's
Message
Kamran Vaziri
Our annual
technical session will be at 10:15 AM on Tuesday, July 15, at the Health
Physics Society (HPS) annual meeting in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The business meeting of our section will be at the end of the technical
session. Please plan to stay around for the business meeting that starts at
12:00 noon as your board of directors values your input.
This year’s election committee consisted of Don Gregory from Oak Ridge
National Lab and Michael Duran from Los Alamos National Lab, and the
committee was chaired by Past-President Scott Walker. We had good member
participation. We received more that twice the number of last year’s votes.
The results will be certified and finalized at the Accelerator
Section’s business meeting.

The Editor's Message
Linnea Wahl
This issue of the
newsletter brings sad news of the death of Tony Sullivan. In his honor, his
friends have prepared a brief review of Dr. Sullivan’s many scientific
accomplishments and contributions, which attests to the fact that he will be
dearly missed by his colleagues in the accelerator health physics community
around the world.
Also in this issue, Accelerator Section President Kamran
Vaziri reminds us that another year has passed and
a new board of directors will begin their term directly following the annual
section business meeting in July. Among the new officers will be a new
newsletter editor. I can’t name any names, but I know you’ll be
pleased with what you see in the next issue. Please start thinking now about
the articles you want to submit for the inaugural issue under new management..

OTHER NEWS
In Memory of Tony Sullivan
We are saddened to report the death of the
distinguished dosimetrist Dr. Anthony Hayes
Sullivan on Monday, May 26, 2008. He died in Worthing Hospital,
West Sussex, at the age of 75 after a
protracted illness.
Tony Sullivan was born in 1933 in Slough, England.
After leaving Sir William Borlase’s Grammar
School in Marlow, Tony studied in the evenings at the Battersea Polytechnic
Institute (forerunner of The University of Surrey) for a University of London
degree in physics, while working during the day for a local engineering
company. He earned an honours degree – always
a significant achievement but particularly for a part-time student. He then
accepted a position at the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment at Aldermaston where he was required to measure radiation
from the Christmas Island atomic bomb test
series (mid-1957). Later that year (October) he observed the dosimetry carried out during the Windscale
Nuclear Reactor #1 fire.The I-35W bridge that
collapsed Wednesday, August 1st was very close to the School of Physics
and Astronomy's Williams Laboratory, known as the "Tandem Lab." The
bridge was twenty feet from the building's loading dock. There were no University staff, faculty, or students in the
laboratory at the time of the collapse.

FROM THE CORRESPONDENTS
News from Spallation
Neutron Source, Oak Ridge National Lab
Don Gregory
The Spallation
Neutron Source (SNS) is in the midst of a
3.5-month run cycle. During the last year, the project has pursued an
aggressive ramp-up of proton beam power on the mercury target. A record power
level of 500 kW (protons on target) was achieved during this run period, and
routine production is in the power range of 400 to 500 kW. Improving
operations reliability will be the primary emphasis for the next year or so -
the beam has been on-target approximately 75% of the planned hours so far
this year. Accelerator physics personnel will also work on reducing losses in
preparation for higher-power operations in future years. Three research
instruments are accepting outside users at present, with another three
instruments approved for use and concentrating on calibration activities and
measurements involving "friendly" collaborators.
