From the Past President

James Liu

It has been a fruitful year for me as the president of the Accelerator Section. I would like to briefly summarize in this message what we have done and achieved this year.
  1. The section, due to the outstanding efforts of Vashek Vylet, has successfully worked with CERN to arrange an international training course on Accelerator Radiation Protection at the conference center in Erice, Sicily, Italy, to be held October 2-9, 2001. Seven out of thirteen lecturers are Accelerator Section members.
  2. Thanks to Scott Schwahn, we had an excellent technical program at the Health Physics Society meeting in Cleveland, with an invited G. William Morgan lecture given by Professor Takashi Nakamura, who is the president of the Japan Health Physics Society.
  3. Geoff Stapleton has received the Health Physics Society Fellowship Award this year (thanks to Ralph Thomas, Bob May, Joe McDonald, and Scott Schwahn).
  4. We have formed a committee of three members, Greg Jones (chair), Mike Grissom, and James Liu, to develop a section website to serve the members. It will be released officially after approval by the Accelerator Section board of directors.
  5. The section is undertaking an effort to have a Health Physics Society summer school for accelerator radiation safety (to be held probably in 2004).

I personally want to commend Linnea Wahl for her great work on the newsletter and her willingness to serve another year. I also appreciate the help and advice from the section officers. In the end, I would like to encourage section members to participate more actively in section activities and to share your ideas and comments with the section officers so that the section can better serve the accelerator community.
