Currently, there are two vacancies in the Radiation Physics Department at SLAC. The positions, one for a senior radiation physicist (Job #17502) and one for a junior radiation physicist (Job #24154), are posted on the SLAC employment web site. Title: Radiation Health Physicist II

Duties: The primary responsibility of the Radiation Physics Department ties in the radiological considerations, operational safety aspects, and shielding design of the facility to which the radiation physicist is assigned. Work involves close interactions with physicists and beam line designers. Will participate in writing beam authorization sheets in conjunction with Accelerator Department Safety Office and be involved in design/development of personnel protection and beam containment systems. Perform shielding and activation calculations and neutron, photon, and charged particle dosimetry. Give assistance to experimenters in solving background problems, detector design, measurements, etc. Will participate in the overall Radiation Safety Program operational health physics activities at SLAC. Research opportunities are available. Publications in journals and paper presentations at professional meetings are encouraged.

Skills: This is an accelerator health physicist position with career opportunities. Position requires Ph.D. or equivalent experience in health physics, nuclear engineering, or physics. Applicant should be familiar with radiation transport calculations; neutron, photon, and charged particle dosimetry; and shielding of accelerators. Experience with nuclear instrumentation and radiation detection is highly desirable. Strong computer (UNIX, PC, Monte Carlo techniques, etc.) skills are necessary. Strong written and oral communication skills are essential. Applicant must be able to work effectively, both independently and within a group and be willing to work nights and weekends (on special occasions.)

Applicant should have extensive experience in shielding design, dosimetry, activation calculations and safety systems for particle accelerators. Experience with nuclear instrumentation, and radiation detection is essential. Strong computer skills (UNIX, PC) and demonstrated experience in shield design with Monte Carlo codes (such as EGS, FLUKA, L AHET, MARS, MCNP, etc.) are necessary. Strong written and oral communication skills are essential. Applicant must have demonstrated experience working effectively, both independently and within a group, and be willing to work on nights and weekends (on special occasions).
