This past January, the Health Physics Society (HPS) Continuing Education Committee, Finance Committee, and Board of Directors approved our proposal for the 2008 professional development school (formerly called the HPS summer school). The school will be held from January 31 through February 2 and is titled "Topics in Accelerator Health Physics." Sponsored jointly by the Accelerator Section and the Northern California Chapter of the HPS, the school will follow immediately after the 2008 midyear meeting in Oakland.
The academic deans, Don Cossairt of Fermilab and Vashek Vylet of Duke University, have developed a schedule of courses that offers two concurrent tracks, one to provide an overview of accelerator health physics and the other to provide more in-depth coverage of special topics in accelerator health physics.
They have lined up a very distinguished faculty for the courses, including themselves and the following experts in accelerator health physics:
The course listing is no less distinguished. Classes expected to be included in the overview track (Track 1: Overview of Accelerator Health Physics), which should attract health physicsists new to accelerator applications or those wishing to expand or refresh their health physics knowledge, include
Classes expected to be included in the in-depth track (Track 2: Specialized Topics in Accelerator Health Physics), are similar to the Track 1 courses but will provide more detail on these topics. This track may be of most interest to those currently working in the field of accelerator health physics.
Students will be free to move between courses in both tracks, thus allowing them to tailor a program that suits their specific needs. The faculty are preparing a single text that is appropriate for students in both tracks. Whichever course a student chooses, he or she can't miss, given the stature of the faculty and the quality of the teaching.
