Many of us in the Health Physics Society's (HPS's) Accelerator Section have been very busy preparing for the 2007 annual meeting, the 2008 midyear meeting on "Radiation-Generating Devices," and the 2008 professional development school on "Topics in Accelerator Health Physics," which will immediately follow the midyear meeting. read more INVITED PAPER: Status and Plans for Implementation of NRC Regulatory Authority for Certain Naturally-Occurring and Accelerator-Produced Radioactive Material Andrew Mauer On August 8, 2005, the President signed into law the Energy Policy Act of 2005 (EPAct) on "Treatment of Accelerator Produced and other Radioactive Material as Byproduct Material." Section 651(e) of the EPAct expanded the definition of byproduct material as defined in the Atomic Energy Act of 1954, as amended (AEA), and placed additional byproduct material under the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC’s) jurisdiction as defined in section 11e.(3) and 11e.(4) of the AEA. read more

2008 MIDYEAR & SCHOOL NEWS 2008 Professional Development School Approved Don Cossairt, Vashek Vylet, and Linnea Wahl This past January, the Health Physics Society (HPS) Continuing Education Committee, Finance Committee, and Board of Directors approved our proposal for the 2008 professional development school (formerly called the HPS summer school). FROM THE CORRESPONDENTS News from Louisiana State University, Center for Advanced Microstructures and Devices Lorraine Marceau-Day The Center for Advanced Microsystems and Devices (CAMD) at Louisiana State University came out of a 3 1/2 week shutdown in good shape. During this time, the liquid helium chamber frame was repaired and a new aluminum chamber was placed in dipole #8 complete with new beam diagnostic capabilities. read more News from Fermi National Accelerator Lab Kamran Vaziri and Don Cossairt Last time we reported the latest Tevatron luminosity record was 228.1E30/cm2/s in the third quarter of 2006.
