Duties: The primary responsibility of the Radiation Physics Department lies in the radiological considerations, operational safety aspects, and shielding design of the facility to which the radiation health physicist is assigned. Work involves close interactions with physicists and beam line designers. Perform shielding and activation calculations and neutron, photon, and charged particle dosimetry. Be involved in design/development of personnel protection and beam containment systems. In conjunction with the project, present shielding design of new beam lines to the Radiation Safety Committee. Participate in initial radiation surveys to verify integrity of shielding design. Participate in writing beam authorization sheets in conjunction with the Accelerator Department Safety Office. Give assistance to experimenters in solving background problems, designing detectors, making measurements, etc. Participate in the overall Radiation Safety Program at SLAC. Research opportunities are available. Publication in journals and paper presentation at professional meetings is encouraged.
Qualifications: Position requires a Ph.D. in health physics, nuclear engineering, or physics. Applicant should have extensive experience in shielding design, dosimetry, activation calculations, and safety systems for particle accelerators. Experience with nuclear instrumentation and radiation detection is essential. Strong computer skills (UNIX, PC) and demonstrated experience in shielding design with Monte Carlo codes such as EGS, FLUKA, LAHET, MARS, MCNP, etc., are necessary. Strong written and oral communication skills are essential. Applicant must have demonstrated experience working effectively, both independently and within a group, and be willing to work nights and weekends (on special occasions).
SLAC is located on 426 acres of Stanford University property, just three miles west of the main campus. The main entrance to the facility is on Sand Hill Road, just east of Interstate 280.
