Health Physicist/Radiation Safety Officer

  • Ensure the health and safety of faculty, staff, students and visitors of the Hospital.
  • Conduct periodic inspections and surveys of authorized laboratories.
  • Survey radiation producing equipment for acceptability and proper function of protective devices to ensure adherence to ALARA principles.
  • Review permit applications for new authorizations as well as amendment requests for existing authorizations.
  • Develop new forms and revise existing forms for the collection of data related to radiation safety.
  •  Revise the radiation safety plan/manual and maintain it in a currently accepted form.
  • Conduct educational meetings about radiation safety and documentation requirements.
  • Prepare periodic reports on the activities involving the use of radioactive materials and deliver to the radiation safety committee.
  • Implement and Maintain a radiation safety database including records of permits, leak tests, laboratory swipes/area surveys, isotope inventory, isotope disposal, personnel dosimetry, and lab worker training records.
  • Maintain knowledge of and interpret the regulations of the US NRC and the NHPP that govern the possession and use of radioactive sources both material and machine produced.
