California Governor Schwarzenegger Appoints Two HPS Members to State Commission

On 14 October 2004, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced his latest appointments to California State commissions, boards, and agencies. Included in his appointments were two members of the Health Physics Society, Donna Earley and James Tripodes. Both Donna and Jim were appointed to the Southwest Low-Level Radioactive Waste Commission.

Following is the text from Governor Schwarzenegger's announcement:

Donna Earley, 51, of Playa del Ray, has been appointed to the Southwestern Low-Level Radioactive Waste Commission. She has served as director of environmental health and safety for Cedars-Sinai Medical Center since 1977. This position requires Senate confirmation and is unpaid.

James Tripodes, 50, of Livermore, has been appointed to the Southwestern Low-Level Radioactive Waste Commission. He is a scientist at the Price-Anderson Amendments Act Office at the University of California Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory where he evaluates potential noncompliance with the U.S. Department of Energy's nuclear safety rules. This position requires Senate confirmation and is unpaid. Tripodes is a Republican.

The Southwestern Low-Level Radioactive Waste Commission, established under Public Law 100-712, is the governing body for the Southwestern Low-Level Radioactive Waste Disposal Compact among Arizona, California, North Dakota, and South Dakota. California, as host state, is required to develop a regional disposal facility. The Commission's key duties include controlling the importation and exportation of low-level waste into and out of the region. As a separate legal entity, it can make recommendations and comments appropriate to its charge under law to do whatever is reasonably necessary to ensure that low-level waste is safely disposed of and managed within the region.
