Darrell Fisher Named DOE's Scientific Director of the National Isotope Program

Darrell R. Fisher

In January 2007 Health Physics Society member Darrell Fisher was named the scientific director of DOE's National Isotope Program.

Dr. Fisher has been with Battelle and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) since 1978, the year he received his doctorate in nuclear engineering sciences from the University of Florida. At the time he was named scientific director for the newly revitalized National Isotopes Program, Fisher was a senior scientist and lead for the Isotope Program at PNNL.

Fisher is currently an officer of the Health Physics Society, serving as treasurer. He has served on a number of committees within the Health Physics Society, including serving as a director and member of the Finance Committee, associate editor of Health Physics, and associate editor of the HPS Newsletter. Fisher has also been very active in the Columbia Chapter of the Health Physics Society, including serving as president.

In addition to his position at PNNL, Fisher holds five academic appointments between Washington State University, the University of Washington Medical School at Seattle, and the Fred Hutchinson Research Center at Seattle. At Washington State University he is an associate professor (lecturer) in the Graduate Program in Environmental Science and Regional Planning, associate professor (lecturer) in the Department of English and Humanities, and associate professor of pharmaceutical sciences; at the University of Washington Medical School he is an affiliate assistant professor of radiology; and at the Fred Hutchinson Research Center he is an affiliate investigator in the Division of Clinical Research.

More information about the National Isotope Program and Fisher's appointment to the scientific director position is contained in a 16 January 2007 article in the TriCity Herald.
